Can Locums Get a Blue Light Card?
Quick Answer
Yes. Blue Light Card has a dedicated Dental Practice category, and your GDC registration number is accepted as proof of eligibility. You do not need an employment letter - which is helpful, because Airlocum cannot issue one.
Why Airlocum Can't Provide Proof of Employment
Locums on Airlocum are self-employed contractors. You provide your services directly to dental practices - you are not an employee of Airlocum or of the practices you work at. An employment letter would misrepresent your status, so we are unable to issue one. This is the same reason we don't operate a pension scheme or deduct tax on your behalf.
How to Apply for Your Blue Light Card
1. Go to bluelightcard.co.uk and sign up under the Dental Practice category.
2. Enter your GDC registration number in the "Job title" field - Blue Light Card accepts this as proof of eligibility for GDC-registered dental professionals.
3. If asked for additional proof, upload a payslip or payment record from a dental practice dated within the last 3 months, showing your name and the practice name. A remittance from a practice you've recently worked at through Airlocum works for this. Redact everything except your name, the practice name and the date.
What About Other Employment Confirmations?
The same applies to mortgage applications, rental referencing and similar requests. As a self-employed locum, your proof of income is your invoices, bank statements and SA302 / tax returns - not an employer letter. Most lenders and referencing agencies have a standard self-employed route that accepts these.
